Restaurants are arguably the most frequented types establishments in the world, regardless of whether they are in a small town or large city. It is difficult to know, with all the choices available, what each eatery serves and the prices they charge. Most people have an idea of the price they want to pay and the type of food they want eat. An understanding of each basic eatery makes it easier to make a decision.

Coffee houses primarily serve beverages in a relaxed atmosphere, allowing patrons to socialize without pressuring them to leave. Most serve pastries and sandwiches, but a wide variation of beverages is their trademark.

Fast food is served inside, from a drive-thru window, or in a parking lot. Most have modest prices and serve sandwiches and ice cream desserts. Vendor carts on sidewalks also serve fast food. A pub restaurant is famous for its vast selection of ale and beer, while food is secondary. A bistro or café serves modest, quick foods in plain surroundings. It is a fast casual dining experience. Cafeterias and buffets use the same principle, which is self-service. A cafeteria serves food ordered from behind a counter as the patron pushes a tray along a rail. Buffets place food on a bar and patrons serve themselves. The foods in this type of restaurant vary greatly, and the price is usually fixed.

Some have a diverse selection, while others cater to one type of food such as seafood or ethnic foods. A server cleans the tables and may provide beverages. A casual and family restaurant is similar establishments that cater to families and prices fall in the medium range. They serve a variety of hot home-style meals, sandwiches and desserts. A server takes the order and delivers food to the table. The server or a cashier takes payment. The atmosphere falls between fast food and fine dining.

Fine dining is a full-service experience. A greeter seats patrons while a different person provides service. Fine dining establishments may have certain rules to follow such as a dress code. Food portions are smaller and prices more expensive, but the food prepared by a chef is more appealing. Fine dining has an elegant, classy atmosphere. A destination restaurant employee’s well-known chefs to prepare food and normally serve smaller portions while offering wine and alcohol to the patron. These are expensive places to eat, but provides the utmost in elegance. They are not just places to eat, but an ultimate dining experience with highly trained staff to serve the guest from start to finish.
