The best time to start a lifelong pursuit of golf is in the early teen years. Golf can be viewed as a reflection of life; be courteous and honest and one will go far, or be rude to others and dishonest with oneself and karma will guarantee the game is not enjoyable. Golf is a game of solitaire played in a group setting and therefore there are simple rules of etiquette that will make it more enjoyable for the teen as well as for everyone else on the course.

An obvious tip is to obey the house rules. Every course has rules specific for them, and most of them are there for a reason. If a hole is designated cart path only, then drivers should stay on the path. Driving off of it will only damage the fairway, or worse, it may cause an accident due to dangerous conditions. Also, use the 90 degree rule on courses that have cart paths, even if that is not a specific rule of the course. Drive along the path to the point where the ball is then turn 90 degrees and drive out to the ball, then return straight to the path. This keeps the fairway in great shape for everyone to enjoy.

A young teen is not the fastest golfer, but some things can be done to remedy that. Playing "ready golf" helps, where the golfer moves quickly and gets ready to hit before he even reaches the tee. Once at the tee, of course, he is expected to take the time to hit a good shot. Other courteous manners are to be mindful of other golfers and be ready to step aside and let the next group play through when they are clearly faster golfers.

Also, for the courtesy of others, teens must learn to keep their voices level and avoid profanity. Nothing ruins a game more than to hear someone yelling and cursing with every stroke. This is simple and common courtesy seen in all aspects of life. The only thing appropriate to yell in golf is "fore," and then only when a rogue ball is hit in the direction of another golfer.

It seems like a special treat to find a stray ball in the woods, but the teen needs to remember he is out to play the game, not go on a scavenger hunt. The only time he should be in the woods is when his ball is in there, and he should not be in there looking for used golf balls. Also, leave the swimming in the lakes for balls to the club. The teen can then purchase the used golf balls through an online supplier.

Golf is a game that involves social interaction and therefore, proper golf etiquette is a must for everyone.
