Forty years ago, local newspapers were the kings of not only the news, they were giants that got the message out and helped sell goods and services. The Sunday newspaper was the place to read the news as well as the place to find almost any product under the sun, but the Internet came along and pecked away at the printed edges and it began to erode the popularity of the newspaper.

For the last decade, local websites have been developing ways to draw consumers by focusing on specific online needs. Newspapers are trying to hold on while cyber-cowboys redefine the meaning of selling. Websites and social networks are the new kings. Businesses use the power of the web instead of newspapers and directories to get a buying message to the public and it's working. Most local businesses don’t spend a lot of money on online advertising, but in aggregate they represent a lot of dollars.

The quest to chase local buyers is a priority in a market that is overflowing with lawyers, shoe shops, dentists and restaurants. In the old days, these close-to-home businesses would take their chances and use newspaper flyers and other advertising gimmicks designed for mail distribution to attract business. They spent the dollars based on consumer buying habits and hoped for the best. Today, the reality for most local businesses is flyers help pay for mail service, but they usually wind up in recycling bins.

In order for businesses to draw local consumers to their websites, they must let them know that they exist. This can be done in a variety of ways. First and foremost, they must have a website. A listing is not enough. The website must have information about the business and give its location, hours and contact information. What the business does is an important element to include on the website. While the business owner may understand very well what they do, it must be described in simple terms. Use photos and diagrams for anything that might be misunderstood.

Once the website has been established, links to it will draw customers. The more links and information that can be found about the company, the more likely people are to patronize the website. Using local online advertising to get people’s attention can be done through pay-per-click advertising on the search engines. Additionally, listings on directories, publishing press releases and writing blogs and articles are other ways to promote a local business through local search advertising.
