Whether a person has a product they want to resell or they make their items themselves, at some point they need to find customers. Sometimes people are looking for an item they need and must look for someone who has it to sell. While many people are comfortable purchasing things on the internet or shopping at big box stores, some people still want to buy from and sell to their hometown people so that they can avoid shipping charges or so they can look at the item in person and feel it and see how sturdy the construction of the object is.

Using an online bulletin board reaches local neighborhoods, but it also reaches far and wide. For sellers, items can be made available to local people, but the option can also be given to have the item shipped. For buyers, it is easy to see if the object sought after is available in the local area, and if it is not, the choice can be made to look at areas a bit farther away.

Newspapers are the traditional marketplace in the neighborhood. Advertising does not get any more local than this. Almost every person within the distribution area of the paper receive it and that means that the ad has a good chance of being viewed by a good portion of them. Many older customers are more comfortable with this traditional kind of advertising.

Bulletin Boards are also a good option for local advertising. Generally a seller can travel to bulletin boards within 10 to 15 miles of their business base and put ads or business cards on them. Most diners, hardware and feed stores and even some churches have bulletin boards available for local business people. These boards are viewed as people wait to be seated at a restaurant or are in line at the store's checkout.

Flea markets and craft shows are options that are sometimes overlooked. This is a good venue if the product needs to be demonstrated or if it is important that the customer can see the quality of workmanship involved in the product. This is true for items like handmade jewelry and antiques. Local advertising can bring in as much or more business than online marketing, and help grow a small business.
