Connecticut’s second oldest town, Wethersfield, is located in the heart of the state and is full of dining options. Wethersfield restaurants are known all over the Nutmeg State as destinations that will please gourmets of every disposition. A trip to this historic community will provide a day’s worth of activities accompanied by fine food.

Old Wethersfield is the part of town that remains essentially unchanged since the days of the Revolutionary War. Its ancient homes and shops are preserved in a slowly-paced atmosphere. Neighbors walk the narrow, shady streets while trading local news and saying hello to strangers. Sandwiches and haute cuisine are offered in this neighborhood.

The Berlin Turnpike, which runs through Wethersfield, is another world altogether. This road was established in the 1950s, and the many motels remind a visitor that this route was how people traveled long distances before the interstate highway system was built. The vernacular architecture hearkens from the mid-20th Century with neon signs fronting modernist buildings that seemed futuristic when they were built. Traditional roadside diners, dot the landscape, as well as more modern fare, such as Mexican, Italian, steakhouses, Japanese and Chinese cuisine. Burger joints and hot dog stands are not uncommon sights on this road that is known as a destination for hot-rodders looking to show off their wheels.

The Silas Deane Highway is named after a famous Wethersfield resident. His former home is located in Old Wethersfield. The Silas Deane Highway connects Wethersfield with adjacent picturesque towns. It is not as genteel as the streets of Old Wethersfield, nor does it have the honky-tonk atmosphere a visitor sometimes finds on the Berlin Turnpike. It is a stately, picturesque road, mostly dedicated to local traffic. Neither too busy to cause distraction, nor too sleepy to cause boredom, the Silas Deane Highway offers a look at small town life in the heart of the Nutmeg State. There are small restaurants scattered along its curbs. Small delis, family-owned and family-oriented neighborhood cafes, and fine dining establishments can be found nestled along the Silas Deane Highway.

Wethersfield’s restaurant scene is robust with a number of options to suit any palate or pocketbook. Some visitors research ahead and plan their visit around where they plan to eat. Other visitors hit the road and head to Wethersfield knowing they will find something to satisfy their appetite for adventure as well as their appetite for food. There is no right or wrong way, and no one leaves disappointed after trying one of the many possible Wethersfield restaurants.
